Jones Day Welcomes Former Assistant U.S. Attorney and Chief of Cybercrime Unit Amy Harman Burkart as Of Counsel in Boston

The global law firm Jones Day announces the arrival of Amy Harman Burkart to Jones Day’s Boston Office as of counsel in the Firm’s Cybersecurity, Privacy & Data Protection Practice. Ms. Burkart comes to Jones Day from the United States Attorney’s Office in Boston, where she has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Cybercrime Unit since 2010 and as the Unit’s chief since 2017.

In her capacity as Unit Chief, Ms. Burkart identified matters for federal investigation and coordinated those efforts with the FBI and other law enforcement partners including the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the FDA, the IRS, and other federal, state, and local agencies. Her investigations and subsequent prosecutions involved intellectual property, and financial crimes including computer intrusions, data breaches, network attacks, securities fraud, theft of trade secrets, insider trading, money laundering, trafficking in counterfeit goods, fraud schemes, and national security-cyber activity.

"Our clients facing data protection issues will immediately benefit from Amy's deep public sector experience in cybersecurity matters," said Dan McLoon, who co-leads Jones Day's Cybersecurity, Privacy & Data Protection Practice. "The security issues and best practices applying to data security are constantly evolving, and adding a proven, experienced professional like Amy to an already strong practice sends a very clear message that Jones Day remains committed to providing our clients access to the top legal talent in the industry."

Added Lisa Ropple, who co-leads the practice with Mr. McLoon, "Amy comes to Jones Day with a reputation as a skilled trial lawyer with a thorough understanding of the current trends in enforcement activities, best practices, and risk mitigation strategies, as they relate to protecting cyber data and other sensitive information. Very few lawyers possess her experience and insight relating to investigations and enforcement actions, and that will bring a valuable perspective to our practice."

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's office, Ms. Burkart worked in private practice with established law firms in Boston and New York, primarily representing clients in enforcement actions and investigations brought by the SEC and in civil matters and in criminal actions brought by federal agencies.

"Amy is joining us at an ideal time, as clients are continually working to understand the complex data protection issues they face every day," said Colleen Laduzinski, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Boston Office. "She knows Boston and its legal community extremely well, and she will be a valuable asset to our team. I enthusiastically welcome her to our Firm."

Ms. Burkart is a member of the Boston Bar Association's White Collar Crime Steering Committee, and has taught white collar crime and criminal procedure courses at Vermont Law School and the Boston University School of Law.

Jones Day is a global law firm with more than 2,500 lawyers in 43 offices across five continents. The Firm is distinguished by: a singular tradition of client service; the mutual commitment to, and the seamless collaboration of, a true partnership; formidable legal talent across multiple disciplines and jurisdictions; and shared professional values that focus on client needs.
